For such a tiny country, Costa Rica features immensely diverse geography that includes mountains, rainforests, and coastlines along both the Pacific and Caribbean. This means that the country experiences two primary seasons: dry season and rainy season! Naturally, you’ll want to know: should you visit during rainy season or dry season in Costa Rica?
Geographically, Costa Rica’s mountainous regions, like the Cordillera Central, influence the way weather systems move across the country. Most of Costa Rica, particularly on the Pacific coast and in central regions like La Fortuna, follows a typical pattern of dry and rainy seasons. Dry season falls between December and April and rainy season falls from June to October.
However, it’s important to note that the Caribbean side has its own unique weather patterns and is actually the opposite of the rest of Costa Rica (i.e. dry season is May through November). I’ll be focusing on the Pacific and central regions of Costa Rica in this comparison guide.
I’ve experienced both rainy season and dry season in Costa Rica and I think both seasons have their strengths and weaknesses!

Dry Season in Costa Rica
The dry season in Costa Rica typically runs from December through April and coincides with the high tourist season. During these months, the weather is much drier, with warm, sunny days and less rainfall (but still some rainfall—you’re in the rainforest after all!).
Dry season in Costa Rica is the best time to visit if you’re looking for clear skies and optimal conditions for outdoor activities like hiking, zip-lining, and beach-going. The dry season is especially favorable for exploring areas like La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano, where you’ll have a better chance of seeing the volcano unobstructed by clouds. Plus, you have a better chance of seeing beautiful sunsets as the weather is typically nice in the afternoons and evenings.
However, because this period aligns with Costa Rica’s peak tourist season, you’ll encounter larger crowds and higher prices for accommodations and tours. The difference between crowds in rainy season versus dry season in Costa Rica are extremely stark, with dry season being easily 10 times or even 50 times as crowded in touristy areas!
Rainy Season in Costa Rica
On the other hand, the rainy season in Costa Rica, which runs from May through November, is characterized by frequent afternoon showers. While it’s often referred to as the “green season” because the rain brings lush greenery and blooming flora, the rain can be heavy, especially from September to November.
Most mornings, however, remain clear, with the rain picking up later in the day. This is an excellent time to visit if you prefer fewer tourists and are looking for budget-friendly options. The rain keeps the crowds away, so you can enjoy a more private experience at popular spots like La Fortuna Waterfall or the hot springs in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. If you’re willing to get up early, you can experience the whole morning with a very low chance of rain and then relax in the afternoons.
You’ll also find lower prices for hotels and tours, making it a great time for more affordable travel. Tours are also more private because there are much fewer people around and you can even negotiate the price of activities and services. For reference, we did a chocolate farm tour during rainy season and were the only two people on the entire plantation, but the guide told us that during high season they usually have 3 tours of 50 people each operating at a time!

So…When Should You Visit Costa Rica?
Having experienced both the dry season and the rainy season in Costa Rica, I can confidently say that each has its own advantages. If you prefer sunny skies and don’t mind the higher prices and larger crowds, the dry season in Costa Rica is ideal. If you’re short on time, it’s worth paying the higher prices in exchange for better weather and more time outdoors.
However, if you’re after a more peaceful experience and don’t mind the rain (or are willing to wake up with the sun), the rainy season in Costa Rica offers a beautifully green landscape, fewer tourists, and lower costs. Everything is much cheaper and I really enjoy how quiet and private everything feels.
Either way, you’re bound to have an unforgettable experience and Costa Rica is a gorgeous country in every kind of weather. Take the weather in stride and just enjoy what this pura vida lifestyle has to offer!
